Pithos Crabs – Hardy Reef Cleanup Crew

Pithos crabs are an excellent addition to any saltwater reef aquarium, prized for their hardworking nature and unique appearance. These small, reef-safe crabs play an important role in maintaining a clean and balanced tank by constantly scavenging for detritus, leftover food, and nuisance algae.

Their natural behavior helps reduce organic waste buildup, which can otherwise lead to poor water quality. By contributing to a healthier environment, Pithos crabs support the overall stability of your reef system, making them a valuable member of any cleanup crew.

In addition to their benefits, Pithos crabs are fun to observe. They spend their time exploring rockwork, picking through crevices, and interacting with their environment, adding both utility and personality to your aquarium.

Why Add Pithos Crabs to Your Reef Tank?

  • Effective scavengers that consume detritus and uneaten food
  • Help control nuisance algae growth
  • Support cleaner water and improved tank stability
  • Generally reef-safe with corals and invertebrates
  • Active and interesting to watch

Care Instructions

  • Tank Requirements: Suitable for nano, medium, and large reef aquariums
  • Water Conditions:
    • Temperature: 72–78°F
    • Salinity: 1.023–1.025
    • pH: 8.1–8.4
Stable parameters are key to long-term health
  • Diet: Primarily scavengers; supplement with algae wafers, sinking pellets, or small meaty foods if needed
  • Aquascape: Provide live rock and crevices for grazing and hiding
  • Temperament: Peaceful; safe with most reef inhabitants, but monitor around very small or weak tank mates
  • Molting: Will shed exoskeletons as they grow—this is normal and not a cause for concern
  • Stocking Tip: Add to established tanks with sufficient natural food sources to prevent starvation

Note:
Like all cleanup crew members, Pithos crabs rely on available food within the aquarium. Avoid overstocking and ensure your tank can support their dietary needs.
