Live copepods are important marine invertebrate detritivores and scavengers which inhabit almost all aquatic environments. They play a crucial role in the aquarium ecosystem as they serve as a natural food source for many reef inhabitants, including fish, corals, and other invertebrates. Copepods help to maintain the overall balance of the aquarium by consuming detritus and algae, which helps to keep the tank clean and your water clear.

Copepods can be added to the tank through live rock, substrate, or as a direct addition. They are generally considered beneficial to the aquarium environment and can contribute to the overall health and stability of your reef tank. Unlike other live foods, marine copepods are consumed by many marine fish and coral in their natural environment and show biochemical profiles that better match the nutritional requirements of marine fish and coral.  Reef-SPEC Pods offer a diverse nutritional value that are packed with the same quality ingredients as Tier 1 Nori Flakes and our DEFCON 1.

To add culture to your reef system, acclimate culture by floating the bottle or set out in room temperature for 20-30 minutes. It is best to release the Reef-SPEC Pod culture in the aquarium at night or when lights are turned down, giving them a chance to swim to their desired hiding spots. The pod culture will begin to migrate; scavenging and eventually reproducing within the reef system. Maintain your Reef-SPEC Pod population by routine feeding of live phytoplankton to keep them thriving and continuing their life cycle. Starting your own copepod culture can be achieved by using a separate culture container with fresh saltwater (not tank water), small air pump and regular dosing of live Phytoplankton.
